What Makes a Good Blessing?
I've been thinking about blessings lately.
Not the long, formal ones spoken from a pulpit. The simple ones. The kind shared before a journey, tucked into a note card, spoken over a meal, or offered quietly to someone facing a difficult season. Those are often the blessings that stay with us.
So what makes a blessing memorable? I don't think it's eloquence.
In fact, the blessings I return to again and again are surprisingly simple. They don't rely on grand language or poetic phrases. They offer something far more lasting.
They remind us that we are not alone.

A Blessing Doesn't Promise an Easy Road
One of the things I appreciate most about a blessing is what it doesn't do. A blessing doesn't pretend life will be easy. It doesn't promise every problem will disappear or every prayer will be answered exactly as we hope. Instead, it acknowledges reality while gently pointing us toward hope.
A blessing for travel isn't really about reaching a destination. It's about companionship on the journey.
A blessing for a graduate isn't about certainty. It's about courage for whatever comes next.
A blessing for someone grieving isn't about fixing pain. It's about offering comfort in the midst of it.
The best blessings don't erase life's uncertainty. They help us carry it.
Blessings as Words We Carry
Perhaps that is why blessings have endured across generations.
They help us name our hopes for one another. They become words we carry into hospital rooms, airports, new homes, classrooms, retirement celebrations, weddings, and ordinary Tuesday mornings.
Long after we forget a conversation, we may still remember someone saying,
"Peace be with you."
"Go with God."
"May grace be with you."
Simple words. Deep roots.
The Blessings at the End of the Letters
I've also noticed something beautiful while reading the New Testament.
Many of the letters don't simply end.
After pages of teaching, encouragement, correction, and theology, the writers often leave their readers with a blessing.
Grace.
Peace.
Love.
Hope.
It's almost as though they wanted their final words to be something the reader could carry into the week ahead. Not simply information. A blessing. There is something deeply pastoral about that. After all the explanations have been given, what remains is a reminder of God's presence.

Why I Love Creating Blessings
Perhaps that's why I find myself drawn to writing and illustrating blessings.
At Carrot Top Studio, much of my work begins with images—flowers, leaves, birds, winding paths, growing things. But often, those images are accompanied by just a few carefully chosen words.
Not because they explain everything. But because they offer something to carry.
Whether printed on a downloadable page, tucked inside a greeting card, or shared in a newsletter, I hope each blessing becomes a small companion for someone's day. A reminder of grace. A reminder of hope. A reminder that even in unfinished seasons, we are held.
A Blessing for Today
So today, I'd simply like to leave you with this:
May you notice what is growing.
May you have patience for what is unfinished.
May you find beauty in ordinary moments.
And may you know that you are loved every step of the way.
If you enjoy simple blessings that combine thoughtful words with original artwork, I invite you to explore the blessing collection at Carrot Top Studio. My hope is that you'll find one to keep for yourself—or to pass along to someone who needs a gentle reminder of grace. 🧡
