A Commissioned Clergy Stole

Commissions are very special to the repertoire of what we create at Carrot Top Studio.. This project was undertaken as a gift from the pastor search team for a clergy member receiving a new call. After listening to the committee’s explanation of the pastor’s ministry and the gifts he’d bring to the new position we started with a sketch.

This fabric had been in the studio for over a year! Its purpose was originally not known but upon learning of this pastor’s energetic personality this fabric that is so full of color and zest seemed to be the perfect compliment to the green base of the proposed stole.

Snip, snip, snip … gathering the elements!

The gift recipient is quite musical and is also married to a professional musician. Additionally one of the church’s ministries is a El Sistema based music through social change organization. Therefore a cross wrapped with a clef to represent the intertwining of faith and music seemed to fit the bill for the back tip of the new stole.

This voided cross is a symbol for taking the gospel out into all the world. Perfect for this pastor who will be leading the charge of outreach and mission for his faith community.

Finished! What else do you want to know? The cup and chalice of course represent Communion but in this case also the importance the pastor sees in the gathering of people around a table to share their stories (and the food!) And the bits of solid green fabrics are the finishing touch in the design. They recall all the bits and pieces of people, events and circumstances it takes to come together to do the work we are called to.

It’s always an honor to be part of ministry and we are grateful for those that trust us with these special commissions! Thank you!
