The work of our hands

With Labor Day approaching in the United States, I’ve been thinking about the work of our hands.

Mine spend a lot of time cutting fabric, sketching ideas, moving pieces around a design wall, sewing, writing, and packing orders. It’s satisfying work, but much of what goes into a finished Carrot Top Studio piece is never seen.

Of course, these aren’t the only hands behind Carrot Top Studio.

For the past several years, my studio assistant, Emily, has been an important part of this little business. Even after our move to Wisconsin changed how we work together, she continues to lend her capable hands and dependable presence to everything we send out into the world, often with one of her three young sewing helpers close by to supervise the work!

Labor Day seems like a good moment to notice all the hands around us: those that teach, build, cook, create, tend, type, repair, care, carry, and serve. So much of the work that keeps our families and communities going happens quietly, one task at a time.

This weekend, may we be grateful for the work we’re able to do, for the people who work alongside us, and for the chance to give those hardworking hands a little rest, too.
