Take a look around almost any church, and you'll find symbols everywhere.

Water in the baptismal font. Wheat and grapes on the communion table. Birds in stained glass windows. Flowers are arranged near the altar.

Why not simply explain everything with words?

Perhaps because Jesus didn't.

Again and again, Jesus taught through images people could see and understand. He spoke of seeds and soil, vineyards and sheep, birds and lilies. He pointed to everyday objects and experiences and used them to reveal deeper truths.

When he wanted to talk about faith, he talked about planting.

When he wanted to talk about God's care, he pointed to birds.

When he wanted to describe the kingdom of heaven, he told stories about fields, fishermen, bread, and pearls.

Jesus understood something we still know today: people remember what they can picture.

In many ways, our culture has become even more visual. We scroll past thousands of images every week. We learn through photographs, icons, videos, and graphics as much as through text. That doesn’t make words less important, but it does remind us that images still have remarkable power to shape memory and meaning.

Churches have understood this for centuries. Long before screens and social media, they used symbols, color, architecture, and art to tell the story of faith in ways people could see and hear.

A symbol allows an idea to linger. A single image can carry a story for years.

That's one reason symbols have always been important to the work we create at Carrot Top Studio. Whether it's a stole, a labyrinth, a sticker, or a piece of art, we're rarely just choosing images because they are beautiful. We're choosing them because they tell stories.

Stories about hope.

Stories about belonging.

Stories about God's presence in ordinary life.

Long after a sermon is forgotten, a symbol may still be quietly doing its work. Perhaps that's why churches continue to use them. They help us remember.
